At the Bagsmith  |  Sharing Traditions

My passion for handwork must be inherited. My great-grandmother was an accomplished seamstress and used her skills to support her young family when they emigrated from Romania to Chicago in the early 1900's. Her daughter, my grandmother, always had a knitting or needlework project in process. I am the proud caretaker of a vest she knitted for my grandfather and several needlepoints works including petit-point silhouettes. She was meticulous...and I continue to marvel at her workmanship.

My mom continued the tradition. My sisters and I have been the lucky benefi ciaries of many wonderful handmade pieces. I have a dress she knitted for me for my 16th birthday in my cedar chest. For our fortieth birthdays, she knitted magnificent coats. Over the years she has lovingly knitted sweaters and afghans for her children and grandchildren. My son wraps himself in one that she made for his college dorm room. My aunt, who shared our home while I was growing up, was a master knitter able to conquer the most complex patterns. With all of this activity around, my passion for fi ber arts is really no surprise.

Pass on these traditions to your friends and family. You can begin by simply buying a kit and getting started!
